“Ochanomizu” photography copyright of Rudy Vega
Rudy Vega, a member of The Photographers Exchange, will be providing a projection show about his Japan exhibit at the Reflections Gallery, Santa Ana (OC), CA this Friday, October 3rd, 2008.
I had an opportunity earlier this week to review Vega’s exhibit. His photographs in many ways are similar to the work of Richard Misrach, large scale landscapes that are populated. Where Misarch is carefully editing out the people in his photographs to provide a greater sense of isolation, Vega is creating just the reverse. He adds people (or trains, such as in Ochanomizu, above) back into the open spaces of his photographic images to provide a greater richness and density.

Picnic #4, Dar Spaincourtsey of Susan Spiritus Gallery
I just received notification that Dar Spain is now (Oops, correction: has been for 20 years) represented by the Susan Spiritus Gallery,Newport Beach (OC).
Gallery press release:
Susan Spiritus Gallery is pleased to be featuring the hand painted work by Dar Spain .
Dar Spain began her career as a landscape painter, working with oils, acrylics and watercolors. In 1981 she began taking photographs and making gelatin silver prints to use as references for her drawings and paintings. When in graduate school, she was introduced to the process of hand coloring and has been using this medium exclusively with her photography ever since.
The Susan Spiritus Gallery is open by appointment only,
Best regards, Doug Stockdale
9/26/08 Update: I had an opportunity this morning to visit the Susan Spiritus Gallery and review the Dar Spains photographs. The first impression is that the painted photographs could be by a contemporary Rembrandt, with the control of the light and shadows, providing a chiaroscuro effect along with the rich colors she uses. Susan also brought our some of Dar’s earlier work and interesting to see the progression in her choice of subjects and how she has been simplifing her composition’s over time to get to the basics of mass, line, shape, color and the creation of form.

Corn Apples, copyright Ida Weygandt, courtsey of Schmidt Dean Gallery
While we were visiting Philadelphia earlier this week, we had the opportunity to visit the Schmidt Dean Gallery (1710 Sansom St, downtown) and review their exhibit in progress. The main gallery was a curated non-photographic exhibit, but the side gallery had some wonderful photographs, including this absolutely delightful one, Corn and Apples, by Ida Weygandt.

Regarding the photographic work of the late Theo Westenberger, the gallery has provided this information: This body of work, which captures an iconic party-colored, slightly skewed and awesomely beautiful view of Southern California of the seventies is a departure for Westenberger, who during her short creative life was an award-winning magazine photographer.
